This is Samardzija’s second straight Opening Day start. Last year he held the Pirates to two hits over eight scoreless innings for the win. He’s the first pitcher to make back-to-back Opening Day starts at PNC Park.

This is Shields’ sixth Opening Day start and his second for the Royals. He lost last year, 1-0, to the White Sox. He wants to start better than he did in 2013 when he was just 2-6 after the first 16 of his 34 starts. After that he went 11-3.

Verlander’s seventh consecutive Opening Day start is also a fresh start. He talked in Spring Training about wanting to put his 2013 struggles behind him and make mechanical adjustments, helped in part by his health.
